1. 관계대명사의 주격

(1) 주격 who

This is the boy. + He came here yesterday.

⇒ This is the boy who came here yesterday. (이 아이가 어제 이곳에 온 소년이다.)

1. 여기서 who는 관계대명사로서 who가 이끄는 절 속에서는 주격 대명사 He의 구실도 하고 있다. 이와 같이 관계대명사가 자신이 이끄는 관계대명사절 속에서 주어의 역할을 하는 경우 이를 주격 관계대명사라 한다.
2. 관계대명사절 who came here yesterday이 수식하는 선행사 the boy는 사람이다. 이와 같이 관계대명사 who는 사람을 선행사로 취하는 관계대명사이다.
3. 관계대명사 who는 사람을 선행사로 하는 주격 관계대명사이다.

• She is a teacher who teaches us English. (그녀는 우리에게 영어를 가르치는 선생님이다.)
• He is the boy who broke the window. (그가 창문을 깨뜨린 소년이다.)
• We need a person who can play the violin. (우리는 바이올린을 연주할 수 있는 사람이 필요하다.)
• I know a man who can speak Korean well. (나는 한국어를 잘 할 수 있는 사람을 알고 있다.)  
• The girl who is dancing is my sister. (춤을 추는 그 소녀는 나의 여동생이다.)
  < ☞ The girl who is dancing is my sister.에서 who is dancing은 관계대명사절로서 선행사인 the girl을 수식하고 있는데 the girl은 이 문장의 주어이다. The girl (who is dancing) is my sister.라고 분석해 보면 이해가 쉬울 것이다. >
• The man who is sitting on the bench is Mr. Smith. (벤치에 앉아 있는 그 남자는 스미스 씨이다.)
  

(2) 주격 which

I have a book. + It is very interesting.

⇒ I have a book which is very interesting.(나에게는 아주 재미있는 책이 한 권 있다.)

1. 여기서 which는 관계대명사로서 which가 이끄는 절 속에서는 주격 대명사 It의 구실도 하고 있다. 따라서 여기 쓰인 which는 주격 관계대명사이다.
   
2. 관계대명사절 which is very interesting이 수식하는 선행사는 a book이다.
   
3. 관계대명사 which는 동물이나 사물을 선행사로 하는 주격 관계대명사이다. 

• Give me the book which is on the desk. (책상 위에 있는 책을 내게 주세요.)
• We have a cat which catches rats very well. (우리에게는 쥐를 아주 잘 잡는 고양이가 있다.)
• Look at that castle which stands on the hill. (언덕 위에 있는 저 성을 보세요.)
• The river which flows through London is the Thames. (런던을 관통해 흐르는 강은 테임즈 강이다.)  

  2. 관계대명사의 목적격

 (1) 목적격 whom

He is the boy. + I met him yesterday.

⇒ He is the boy whom I met yesterday. (그는 내가 어제 만났던 소년이다.)

1. 여기서 whom은 목적격 him을 대신하는 관계대명사로서 whom이 이끄는 관계대명사절 whom I met yesterday 속에서는 met의 목적어 구실을 하고 있다. 이와 같이 관계대명사가 자신이 이끄는 관계대명사절 속에서 목적어의 역할을 하는 경우 이를 목적격 관계대명사라 한다. 
2. 관계대명사절 whom I met yesterday가 수식하는 선행사는 the boy이다. 
3. 관계대명사 whom은 사람을 선행사로 하는 목적격 관계대명사이다. 

• The boy whom I believed to be honest deceived me. (내가 정직하다고 믿었던 그 소년은 나를 속였다.)
• He is one of the scientists whom we all respect. (그는 우리 모두가 존경하는 과학자 중의 한 사람이다.)
• He killed his wife whom he loved so much. (그는 그가 그렇게 사랑했던 아내를 죽였다.)
• The girl whom we visited yesterday is very sick. (우리가 어제 찾아갔던 그 소녀는 많이 아프다.) 

보충 학습 : 목적격 관계대명사는 동사의 목적어가 될 수 있을 뿐 아니라 전치사의 목적어도 될 수 있다.

This is the lady. + I played tennis with her.

⇒This is the lady with whom I played tennis.
= This is the lady whom I played tennis with. (이사람이 내가 테니스를 같이 쳤던 그 숙녀이다.)

1. 여기서 the lady와 her는 동일인이고, her는 with의 목적어이다.
2. her를 관계대명사 whom으로 바꾸어 한 문장으로 만들면 whom은 with의 목적격 관계대명사가 된다.
3. 이 경우 전치사 with는 관계대명사 whom 앞이나 관계대명사절의 뒤에 위치하게 된다.

• She is the girl with whom Tom was talking. (그녀가 탐이 이야기를 나누고 있었던 그 소녀이다.) = She is the girl whom Tom was talking with.
• This is Mr. Brown of whom I told you yesterday. (이 분이 내가 어제 당신에게 말했던 브라운 씨이다.) = This is Mr. Brown whom I told you of yesterday.

(2): 목적격 which

This is the book. + I read it yesterday.

⇒ This is the book which I read yesterday. (이것이 내가 어제 읽었던 책이다.)

1. 여기서 which은 목적격 it을 대신하는 관계대명사로서 which가 이끄는 관계대명사절 which I read yesterday 속에서는 read의 목적어 구실을 하고 있다. 
2. 관계대명사절 which I read yesterday가 수식하는 선행사는 the book이다. 
3. 관계대명사 which는 사물이나 동물을 선행사로 하는 목적격 관계대명사이다. 

• She wears a ring which her mother left. (그 여자는 그녀의 어머니가 물려준 반지를 끼고 있다.)
• I have lost the watch which my father bought for me. (나는 아버지가 내게 사준 시계를 잃어버렸다.)
• This is the letter which he sent to me yesterday. (이것은 그가 어제 나에게 보낸 편지이다.)

보충 학습 : which는 동사의 목적어가 될 뿐 아니라 전치사의 목적어로도 쓰인다.

This is the house. + She lives in it.

⇒ This is the house which she lives in.  =  This is the house in which she lives.
        (여기가 그녀가 살고 있는 집이다.)

1. 여기서 the house와 it는 동일한 것이고, it은 in의 목적어이다.
2. it을 관계대명사 which로 바꾸어 한 문장으로 만들면 which는 in의 목적격 관계대명사가 된다. 
3. 이 경우 전치사 in은 관계대명사 which 앞이나 관계대명사절의 뒤에 위치하게 된다.

• The book which you are looking for is in the drawer. (당신이 찾는 책은 서랍 속에 있다.)
  = The book for which you are looking is in the drawer.
• Those are the cats which Nancy takes care of. (저것들이 낸시가 돌보고 있는 고양이들이다.)
  = Those are the cats of which Nancy takes care.
• The hotel which we are staying at is very large. (우리가 머물고 있는 그 호텔은 아주 크다.)
  = The hotel at which we are staying is very large.

3. 관계대명사의 소유격

(1) 소유격 whose

The doctor likes to play chess. + His office is near my house.

⇒ The doctor whose office is near my house likes to play chess.
    (나의 집 근처에 사무실이 있는 그 의사는 장기 두기를 좋아한다.)

1. 여기서 whose는 who의 소유격 관계대명사이다. 따라서 whose office와 같이 whose 다음에는 반드시 명사가 뒤따르게 되는 점에 유의해야 한다.
2. whose가 이끄는 관계대명사절 whose office is near my house가 수식하는 선행사는 the doctor이다.
3. 관계대명사 whose는 사람을 선행사로 하는 소유격 관계대명사로서 whose 다음에는 반드시 명사가 와야 한다.

• She has a son whose name is Dick. (그녀에게는 이름이 딕인 아들이 있다.)
• These are the children whose parents are dead. (이들은 부모가 죽은 아이들이다.)
• I met a boy whose father is a doctor. (나는 아버지가 의사인 한 소년을 만났다.)
• I know the lady whose son bought this toy car. (나는 이 장난감 자동차를 산 아이의 어머니를 알고 있다.)

(2) 소유격 whose / of which

I have found a book. + Its cover is red.

⇒ I have found a book whose cover is red. (나는 표지가 빨간 책을 한 권 찾아냈다.)

1. 여기서 whose는 which의 소유격 관계대명사이다. 따라서 whose cover와 같이 whose 다음에는 반드시 명사가 뒤따르게 되는 점에 유의해야 한다.
2. whose가 이끄는 관계대명사절 whose cover is red가 수식하는 선행사는 a book이다.
3. 관계대명사 whose는 사람 뿐 아니라 사물과 동물을 선행사로 하는 소유격 관계대명사로서 whose 다음에는 반드시 명사가 와야 한다.

• Look at the mountain whose top is covered with snow. (정상이 눈으로 덮여있는 산을 보세요.)
• I saw a car whose windows were all broken. (나는 창문이 모두 깨져버린 차를 보았다.)
• We passed a house whose roof had been blown off. (우리는 지붕이 날아가 버린 집을 지나쳐 갔다.)

보충 학습 : 선행사가 사물인 경우에는 whose 대신에 of which를 사용할 수 있다. 이는 무생물의 소유격을 of를 이용해 나타내는 형태와 같은 것이다.

I have found a book. + The cover of it is red.

⇒ I have found a book the cover of which is red.

• Look at the mountain whose top is covered with snow.
  = Look at the mountain the top of which is covered with snow.
• I saw a car whose windows were all broken.
  = I saw a car the windows of which were all broken.
• We passed a house whose roof had been blown off.
  = We passed a house the roof of which had been blown off.

4. 관계대명사 that를 사용하는 경우

(1) 사람과 동물 두 가지가 선행사인 경우:

• Look at the boy and his dog that are coming this way. (이쪽으로 오고 있는 소년과 그의 개를 보세요.)
• This is a picture of a man and a horse that are crossing the river. (이것은 강을 건너고 있는 남자와 말의 그림이다.)

(2) all, every, some, any, no 등이 선행사인 경우:

• All that glitters is not gold. (반짝이는 것이라고 모두 금은 아니다.)
• He spent all the money that he has. (그는 그가 가진 돈을 모두 썼다.)
• Is there anyone that can speak English? (영어를 할 줄 아는 사람이 있습니까?)
• He didn’t say anything that we wanted to know. (그는 우리가 알고 싶어했던 것을 아무 것도 말해주지 않았다.)
• Every boy and girl that I know likes ice cream. (내가 아는 모든 소년 소녀는 아이스크림을 좋아한다.)

(3) the only, the very, the same 등이 선행사에 포함되어 있는 경우:

• This is the only English book that he has. (이것이 그가 가지고 있는 유일한 영어 책이다.)
• Man is the only animal that can speak. (인간은 말을 할 수 있는 유일한 동물이다.)
• He is the very man that I have wanted to employ. (그는 내가 채용하고 싶어했던 바로 그 사람이다.)
• That’s the very thing that I have been looking for. (저것은 내가 찾고 있던 바로 그것이다.)
• This is the same watch that I lost yesterday. (이것은 내가 어제 잃어버렸던 것과 똑같은 시계이다.)

(4) 선행사가 형용사의 최상급이나 서수로 수식을 받는 경우:

• The first thing that you must do is to pass the exam. (당신이 해야 할 첫 번째 일은 시험에 합격하는 것이다.)
• John was the first person that arrived here. (존이 이곳에 제일 먼저 도착한 사람이었다.)
• This is the tallest building that I have ever seen. (이것은 내가 본 것 중 가장 높은 건물이다.)
• He is the greatest actor that has ever lived. (그는 지금까지 생존했던 가장 위대한 배우이다.)

(5) 의문사 who가 선행사일 경우:

• Who that has common sense can believe such a thing? (상식을 가진 사람이라면 누가 그런 것을 믿겠는가?)
• Who that knows him will believe him? (그를 아는 사람이라면 누가 그를 믿을 것인가?)

5. 관계대명사 what의 용법

Show me the thing. + It is in your pocket.

⇒ Show me what is in your pocket. (당신 주머니에 있는 것을 내게 보여 주시오.)

1. 여기서 what은 the thing과 it을 대신하는 관계대명사로서 what이 이끄는 관계대명사절 what is in your pocket(당신 주머니에 있는 것)은 show의 직접목적어로 쓰이고 있다. 
2. 관계대명사절 what is in your pocket에서 what은 선행사는 the thing을 포함하는 관계대명사이다. 
3. what은「선행사를 포함한 관계대명사」로서 what은 the thing(s) which, that which의 뜻을 갖는다. 
4. 다른 관계대명사가 형용사절을 이끄는데 반해, what은 명사절을 이끌게 된다. 따라서 what이 이끄는 관계대명사절은 문장의 주어, 목적어, 보어로 쓰인다.
   

• What he said is true. (그가 말한 것은 사실이다.)< ☞ What he said는 주어 >
• I don’t believe what he said. (나는 그가 말한 것을 믿지 않는다.):what he said는 목적어
• That is what he said. (그것은 그가 말한 것이다.) < ☞ what he said는 보어>
• Don’t put off till tomorrow what should be done today. (오늘 해야 할 일을 미루지 마라.)
• You may do what you’d like to do. (당신이 하고 싶은 것을 해도 좋다.)
• She is not what she was. (그녀는 예전의 그녀가 아니다.)

6. 관계대명사 as의 용법

선행사에 such, the same, as등이 있을 때, 뒤의 as는 관계대명사로 본다.

* Choose such friends as will benefit you. (will의 주어; 주격)

* I have the same trouble as you have. (have의 목적어; 목적격)

* As many men as came were caught. (온 사람은 다 붙잡혔다; 주격)

* He is absent, as is often the case. (as의 선행사는 He is absent(절))

* He is American, as I knew from his accent. (그의 말투로 안 일이지만 그는 미국인 이었다.)

* As was the custom with him, he went out for a walk after supper.

(여느때처럼 식사 후에 산책 나갔다.)

♣He was sleeping as she was speaking. (접속사: 시간)

I like her as one of my friends. (전치사: ∼로서)

7. 관계대명사 but 과 than의 용법

(1) But : but은 그 자체에 부정의 뜻이 있어 who∼ not, that∼ not, which ∼not등의 구문으로 바꿀 수 있다.

① 등위 접속사로 쓰이는 경우.

* Summer is hot, but winter is cold.

* He is a hard-working but not very intelligent boy.

② 부사로 쓰이는 경우.

* He is but a child. (그는 단지 어린애에 지나지 않는다.)

* It is but a question of money. (그것은 단지 돈에 관한 문제이다.)

◇ 부사로 쓰이면 단지, 오로지, 불과(only)의 뜻으로 쓰이며,But을 생략해도 문장이 성립한다.

③ 전치사로 쓰이는 경우.

* All but him were drowned. (그를 제외하고는 모두가 익사했다.)

* Nobody but me attended the meeting.

(나를 제외하고는 아무도 그 모임에 참석하지 않았다.)

◇ but이 전치사로 쓰이면 except, save의 뜻으로 쓰이며, but을 생략하면 문장이 성립하지 않는다. (but + 목적격 형태로 쓸 것.)

④ 종속 접속사로 쓰이는 경우.

* No one is so old but he may learn. = No one is so old that he may not learn.

◇ 종속 접속사로 쓰이면 that ∼ not의 뜻으로 쓰이며,but이하의 문장은 완전한 문장이 된다.

⑤ 관계 대명사로 쓰이는 경우.

◇선행사에 부정어인 not, no 등이 있는 경우, but속에 not의 뜻 포함

* There is no rule but has some exceptions. = There is no rule that has not some exceptions.

(2)than: than도 뒤에 명사, 대명사가 생략되어 관계대명사처럼 쓰인다.

◇선행사에 more가 있는 문장에서 주격 또는 목적격으로

* There are more books than are needed.

* Her service has been more valuable than was supposed.

* She always has more money than she needs.

(비교급 more 때문에 than이 왔고 타동사 needs의 목적격이 되어 앞으로 나온것임

8. 복합관계대명사와 복합관계형용사의 용법

(1)복합관계대명사

복합관계대명사란 "관계사(that제외) + ever" 의 형태로 선행사를 포함하여 선행사의 역할과 관계대명사 역할을 동시에 한다.

①명사적 용법 : 주어와 목적어로 쓰인다. 명사절을 유도한다.

* Give it to whoever wants it. (= anyone who; wants의 주어)

* Give it to whomever you like. (= anyone whom; like의 목적어)

* Choose whichever you like. (= anything that)

* I will give you whatever you need. (= anything that)

②형용사적 용법: whichever와 whatever만이 쓰인다.

* You may read whatever book you like.(= any book that)

* Take whichever book you like. (= any of the books that)

* Whosever horse comes in first wins the prize. (= anyone whose)

◇ whosever는 거의 쓰이지 않고 anyone whose가 쓰인다.

②부사적 용법: 양보의 부사절을 이끈다.

* Whoever may come, he will be welcome. (= No matter who)

* Whatever you may do, do it well. (= No matter what)

* Whichever you choose, you will be pleased. (= No matter which)

◇오늘의 영어에서는 may를 안 쓰고 직설법을 쓰는 경우가 많다.

◇Whatever는 부정문, 의문문에서 강조어로 쓰인다.

* There can be no doubt whatever about it.

* Is there any chance whatever? (조금이라도 가망이 있습니까?)

(2) 복합관계형용사 

* He spoke to me in french, which language I could not understand.

 ->관계대명사로서의 which가 명사 language를 수식한다.

* I gave them what money I had.

->what은 money를 수식하는 동시에 I had를 형용사절로 money에 연결시킨다.

= I gave them all the money that I had. (what = all the....that)

* I will approve whichever(or whatever) course you decide on.(복합관계형용사)  

9. 관계대명사의 생략

(1) 타동사 or 전치사의 목적

* He has no friend (whom) he can depend upon. (전치사의 목적어)

* This is the house (which) he lives in.

(2) 주격보어, 목적격보어로 쓰일 때

* He is not the man (which or that) he was two years ago.

(그는 2년전의 그가 아니다.)

(3) there is, there are가 계속 될 때.

* He taught me the difference (that) there is between right and wrong.

(4) There is, Here is, It is, What is, Who is로 시작되는 구문에서.

* There is a boy (who) wants to see you.

* It was he (that) met her yesterday.

(5) 현재분사, 과거분사 앞에서 '주격관계대명사+be' 생략

. The woman (who is) standing by the door is my aunt.

. The woman (who is) loved by him is my sister.

. I have a book (that is) written in English.
